The long and fat version…
After working a few jobs in the construction trade, I eventually pursued a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Iowa. (Go Hawks!)
I had the specific goal of becoming a sports broadcaster, and did as much as possible to build my resume and experience in sports journalism and broadcasting.
I wrote for The Daily Iowan and hosted talk shows on KRUI, the school’s student radio station. I covered football, basketball, wrestling, track, baseball, and virtually every sport in the athletics department.
I also did high school football play-by-play and eventually became sports director at KRUI.
But, perhaps due to my eagerness to build a sports-broadcasting resume, I became bored with sports. I realized that attending perfunctory press conferences and (usually meaningless) postgame interviews wasn’t for me. I was more at home in the stands than the press box.
And, to be frank, I was a media person who liked sports competing with media people who loved sports.
So I moved on…
After graduating, I completed a summer internship with Manatt’s Inc., a large road-building and paving company, helping to plan, write, and edit their summer newsletter. It was here that I realized there are thriving companies, in all sectors, that need my writing and communication skills.
I took a job with a website-building company, writing web content for a variety of small businesses. I then moved into a role with McGrath Auto in Hiawatha, working as their primary Web Content Creator.
I began providing research, writing, and editing services on the side and eventually became a full-time freelance writer. I have been a successful, well-fed independent writer since 2014.
I now live in rural Floyd County, Iowa between Charles City and Nashua. My children attend school in Nashua, where we are also members of St. John Lutheran Church.

When I’m not providing writing services to clients, I can be found (depending on the season) kayaking, fishing, riding horses, snowshoeing, or simply spending as much time outside as possible. I also enjoy reading; mostly history but also economics, psychology, business, wellness, and science books.
